October is Black History Month – a time to celebrate the history, achievements and contributions of Black people across our communities. This year’s theme, Reclaiming Narratives, marks a significant shift towards recognising and correcting the narrative of Black history and culture.
Throughout the month you can join us at the University of Reading and across the Reading community, as we celebrate Black History Month with an array of educational, inspiring and insightful events.

EXHIBITION: RECLAIMING NARRATIVES WITH NO MORE TABLE TALK
Thursday 10 October – Friday 25 October
Artistic spaces and environments can often serve as a catalyst for dialogue and understanding, bringing individuals together to appreciate different perspectives and tackle difficult subjects in a safe space.
The exhibition focuses on amplifying Black voices and experiences.

WHAT DID DIVERSITY MEAN IN THE ROMAN WORLD?

The Roman world, which spanned three continents, was dazzling in its diversity. The word ‘diversity’ is from the Latin word ‘diversitas’ – but what did diversitas mean for the Romans?
This Black History Month, Dr Sam Agbamu, of Reading’s Classics Department, will explore the Roman roots of the concept of diversity.

CREATIVE CONNECTION: AMPLIFYING BLACK FILMMAKERS
Thursday 17 October, 6:30-8:30PM
Visit Reading Biscuit Factory for a screening of a selection of short films, featuring and made by talented creatives from the Caribbean and African community.
There will be live music before the screenings and a Q&A after the screenings, with a chance to network and meet filmmakers and creatives.
The event is part of Creative Connection run by Through A Different Lens and supported by the University of Reading and BAME Staff Network.

SHOW RACISM THE RED CARD’S ANNUAL WEAR RED DAY

Support the thousands who fight racism by wearing red!
2024 is the 10th Anniversary of Wear Red Day. A landmark that the charity, Show Racism the Red Card are incredibly proud of. Their first celebration in 2014 saw 7,000 people registering to take part. In 2023, that figure exploded to become 615,000 participants celebrating.
