Celebrating 50

Alumni, students and staff come together to celebrate the 50th anniversaries of the School of Law and the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication.

As the University of Reading marks its centenary year, we have been reflecting on the people, places and milestones that have shaped our community over the past 100 years.

Among these celebrations, it was a delight to see so many alumni return to campus to celebrate 50 years of the School of Law, and 50 years of the Department of Typography and Graphic Communication.

Both occasions brought alumni, students, staff and friends back to campus to reconnect, share memories and celebrate the lasting impact of their disciplines.

School of Law

For half a century, the University of Reading’s School of Law has been shaping the legal minds of the future, delivering world-class teaching, undertaking ground-breaking research, and providing transformative student experiences.

What began in 1974-1975 with just 40 students has evolved into a dynamic, internationally connected Law School with thriving campuses in both Malaysia and the UK. Our commitment to innovation is evident in everything we do; from pioneering teaching methods and an award-winning academic tutoring programme, to our nationally recognised pro bono initiatives that empower students to create real-world change.

Our graduates have gone on to become barristers, judges, policymakers, international advisers and leaders across a wide range of sectors, demonstrating the far-reaching influence of a Reading legal education.

Head of School, Professor Mark Poustie, said: “As the new Head of the School I want to acknowledge the efforts of all my colleagues and predecessors who have contributed to that continuing success over the first 50 years of the School and to pay tribute to all our graduates – we are very proud of you and all you have achieved!

“I’m honoured to have the task of leading what is a very vibrant and globally facing School community into its next 50 years and continuing to ensure we produce world leading research and that our excellent students are equipped for work in a changing world, and not just in the legal profession”.

In June 2025, alumni returned to campus to celebrate this remarkable milestone, sharing memories of their time at Reading and reflecting on the School’s evolution over five decades.

2018-2026 Head of School, Professor James Devenney, shared: “Our 50th anniversary celebrations were an important milestone for us to reflect upon. It was fantastic to celebrate the wonderful achievements of our School community over this period.  We were delighted to welcome so many alumni, former colleagues and friends of the School to campus.

“We also took the opportunity to make a presentation to Emeritus Professor Chris Newdick, who is so fondly remembered by staff and students alike, to mark his outstanding service during this period.

“The sheer amount of energy, enthusiasm, commitment and ambition for the School evident during the celebrations mean the next 50 years will be very exciting, as the School continues to shape the future of legal education!”

Department of Typography and Graphic Communication

In 1968, degrees in Typography and Graphic Communication were ratified and the popularity of these courses resulted in the opening of a full Typography and Graphic Communication  Department in 1974. ‘Design for Reading’ continues to thrive in a department internationally renowned for its research and teaching excellence.

Our graduates have gone on to design typefaces used on mobile phones throughout India, as well as dictionaries and schoolbooks at Oxford University Press, designed the masthead of the Guardian newspaper and the iconic Penguin Clothbound Classics covers.

In September 2025, graduates, students, friends and University staff past and present gathered to celebrate 50 years of the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication.

The event showcased the creativity, innovation and sense of community that have defined the Department since its founding. Guests explored an exhibition highlighting key moments from the past five decades, while sharing personal stories about the friendships, careers and opportunities that began at Reading.

Lecturer in Professional Design Practice, James Lloyd, shared:

“It was incredible to be part of conversations between our very first students and our very latest graduates.

“In particular, there was a shared understanding that, while so much has changed over 50 years, the core typographic teachings and shared passion for the subject remain at the heart of the Department. ‘Design for Reading’ is what we’re about, but it’s great to make time for talking sometimes. Thanks so much to everyone who attended.”
