The University of Reading has been recognized as The Times and The Sunday Times Sustainable University of the Year 2025, a well-deserved celebration of its outstanding commitment to tackling climate change and driving sustainability.
For years, Reading has been at the forefront of environmental efforts, achieving some truly impressive milestones. Since 2009, the university has slashed its carbon emissions by over 59.7% and reduced its waste by 35% a testament to how serious it is about making a difference. Whether its cutting emissions, saving energy, or finding smarter ways to manage resources, Reading has consistently shown that sustainability isn’t just a goal, it’s a way of life.
But it’s not just about what happens on campus. The University of Reading is also leading the way in climate research and education, ensuring that students leave equipped to tackle the environmental challenges of tomorrow. In 2021, the university’s climate research efforts earned it the Queen’s Anniversary Prize, one of the highest academic honours in the UK. This kind of recognition highlights Reading’s role as a global leader in climate science and innovation.

The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025 praised the university’s “impressive headway” toward becoming one of the greenest universities in the world. Alongside this sustainability accolade, Reading climbed 10 places in the national rankings to join the top 25 universities in the UK making it a clear sign of its all-around excellence.
