A Guide To Moving Out Sustainably

Are you moving out of your accommodation at the end of this semester? It is that time of year again where thousands of UOR students will either be moving out of their accommodation to return back home for the summer, or moving into new accommodation. Therefore, we have put this helpful guide together to signpost you in the right direction so you can move out as sustainably as possible!

How to pack sustainably:

  • Pack sustainably – use suitcases, duffle bags, and reusable containers when possible, instead of cardboard boxes
  • Use second-hand boxes – you can ask local supermarkets and shops for their leftover cardboard boxes
  • Protecting items – use clothing, soft personal items or recycled paper instead of bubble wrap and packing peanuts
  • Packing materials – you can use packing paper or honeycomb wrap, which can be recycled after use

What to do with unwanted food:

  • Donate to local foodbanks – help reduce you environmental impact and help the community at the same time
  • Ask around and share
  • Create meal plans with the food you have left in the cupboards and fridge

How to throw waste and recycle correctly:

  • Ensure your rubbish is all in the bin with the lid shut, otherwise it will not be collocated.
  • Take excess waste to the re3 Household Waste and Recycling Centre. Don’t forget to book a free slot before you move out.
  • Keep your front garden clean and don’t leave your bin on the pavement
  • Red bins are for clean recycling only. Make sure not to use bags, keep all items loose, otherwise your bin won’t be collected
  • Glass won’t be collected – you need to take bottles and jars to the glass recycling banks
  • Batteries and vapes must go in a clear bag on top of your recycling bins

What to do with unwanted items such as kitchen items, furniture, books and clothing:

  • Donate to charity shops
  • Sell elsewhere – eBay, Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree to sell larger items
  • Offer items to your hallmates, housemates, and friends

Hello Neighbour campaign:

Did you know there are a number of different initiatives as part of the Hello Neighbour campaign at UOR which you can be a part of:

  • Hello Neighbour move out leaflet drops on Tuesday 27th May, Thursday 29th May and Wednesday 4th June which is a great opportunity to ask questions about how to recycle and move out responsibly.
  • RSU are collecting in-date, unopened food at the SU Welcome Desk, all food collected will then be donated to WCDA’s Food Bank.
  • Donation Day on Tuesday 3rdJune from 11am – 3pm, based at St Luke’s Church on Erleigh Road in the off-campus accommodation area.

Finally, please switch off everything in your accommodation before you leave, this makes a big impact in terms of saving money and carbon emissions!
