Over the past two years, we’ve been working to improve cycle security across our campuses. This follows feedback from staff and students, who told us bike theft concerns were a major barrier to cycling.

Using feedback from our Travel Survey, we also reviewed cycle theft hotspots on campus. This helped us identify opportunities to improve and expand secure cycle parking facilities on Whiteknights Campus.
As part of this work, we have delivered:
- Upgrades to the secure cycle shelter at the Library
- A new secure shelter at the SportsPark
- A new secure shelter at Whiteknights House
- And most recently, a new secure shelter at Central Square, next to Minghella
These improvements form part of our wider commitment to making sustainable travel safer, more convenient and more accessible for staff and students.
Accessing the shelters
To use the secure cycle shelters, you will need:
- Your Campus Card
- Your unique four-digit ID number
Staff and students should first visit the Security Office at Whiteknights House to have cycle shelter access added to their Campus Card. You only need to do this once, for all shelters.
To find your four-digit ID number, visit the Campus Card webpage and sign in. Once your access is activated, simply tap your card at the shelter entrance and enter your ID number to gain access.
Help us keep bikes secure
While secure shelters provide an extra layer of protection, we encourage all cyclists to remain vigilant when storing their bikes on campus.
To help reduce thefts:
- Avoid allowing others to follow you into the shelter (“tailgating”)
- Always secure your bike within the shelter using a high-quality lock
- We recommend using a D-lock where possible
You can purchase ‘Diamond rated’ D-locks for a discounted price and can collect them from the Security Office at Whiteknights House. Only £10! (RPP £54.99).

We’ll continue listening to feedback from staff and students to help shape future sustainable travel improvements across campus, so keep an eye out for more updates soon.
